According to Chinese state media, China has begun sending its most advanced fighter aircraft, the J-20, to patrol the East and South China Seas.

The deployment is meant to “better safeguard China’s aviation security and marine interests,” according to military analysts quoted in the state-run newspaper Global Times on Wednesday.

According to Global Times, Ren Yukun, a representative for the J-20’s state-run manufacturer, noted that performing patrols was a “training routine” for the J-20 now that it is equipped with Chinese engines.

Meanwhile, China claims sovereignty over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands, also known as the Diaoyu Islands, in the East China Sea. In recent years, the US has reaffirmed its commitment to defend the Japanese islands if they are attacked by a foreign power.
The deployment of the J-20s, according to experts, demonstrates two things: China’s greater confidence in its military capabilities and a message to other countries involved in the territorial conflict.

According to Peter Layton, a visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), “today has in regular service a fleet of advanced stealth fighters as good as the Americans, who remain the benchmark.” “Any foreign military aircraft straying into China’s declared airspace in the East and South China Seas may now be intercepted by J-20s,” he added as China’s message to the world.
While such a move would be politically risky, Layton explained that the J-20’s large operational radius allows it to patrol further out to sea or stay longer in locations like the East China Sea.
